We met Kevin and Sharon, a lovely couple from Singapore, in Bunaken Islands last october 2015 and they shared with us their experience of the Maldives. This post is about their trip to Ellaidhoo Resort, in Alifu Atoll. Seems they had great snorkeling there, better than in Lux Resort.
Resort seems to be nice and affordable. Here is what Kevin says about it :
"Ellaidhoo Maldives was an amazing snorkeling destination. The House Reef was full of life and very hard to top. The easiest parts were at the jetty and dive center.
There was a breakwater wall round the island. Spoilt the view a bit, but necessary. To get to the reef / drop off, we had to swim in via entry points between the wall.
Choose entry points that are wider, they will be easier to maneuver through. Check the current 'stick' off the dive center to determine the direction to snorkel. (The current direction changes) After which you can pretty much let the current take you around the island. Its not too strong most of the way.The house reef is very accessible. You can reach it within 30 seconds from shore with minimal effort.
Many sharks, morays, trevalli, tuna, scorpion fish, crabs and ( squid at the inner wall). A day trip to nearby Maaga Island was fun. Saw some unusual stuff and snorkeled there.
The food was not bad. Some dishes like the curries were nice. The restaurant had a sand floor, our legs kept getting bitten, so spray insecticide on ankles before meals! The rooms were three star standard. They were very decent for the price.
Didn't bother with the overwater bungalows as they were built too high and had no access to the water.Overall. Ellaidhoo was a very affordable Maldives destination. The facade and rooms were a bit old. But very decent for the price. I took a speedboat and was fortunate for a smooth ride. Seaplanes in Maldives are pricey. The Ellaidhoo Reef is a snorkelers dream. Will be back!"
